Dear Royals Members,
We reach out to you today to convey the news that based on the current reality of the prevalence of COVID-19 here in our city, the decision has been made by the Board of Directors that the Royal Canadian Curling Club will be closing for the remainder of what would have been our 2020-21 curling season. This decision is disappointing but ultimately became unavoidable.
The decision to close comes from the current state of affairs here in Toronto, where we find ourselves once again in lockdown due to the growing rate of COVID-19 within our community. Based on very strong registration numbers, we worked through the end of the summer and into fall, following both public health and the curling governing bodies’ advice, in implementing measures that were compliant with everything required to put us in a position to be able to open. Unfortunately, while navigating rigorous preparation during a pandemic, once the rate of community transmission began to rise, it was no surprise that the city and province began to re-impose many restrictions for our safety.
Throughout the past ten months, we have worked diligently as a Board, first in taking the prudent and necessary step to close our doors back in March, and then continue following both governmental and public health orders and advice as we worked to prepare to potentially be able to open our doors safely in this new world. Ultimately, regardless of preparation, we find ourselves here today with the announcement that there will not be curling at the Royals this season.
In the coming weeks, we will be reaching out to you all again with financial details on the impact of the past year and how we are forecasting the impact moving forward for our individual members and associate leagues. Our goal, as has been the case since the beginning of the pandemic, is to be as thorough and transparent as possible and keep you all informed as to how we will all play a role in the viability of the Royals for the short-term and long-term future of the club. As your Board, it is our responsibility to make decisions that ensure that our club remains healthy and viable in all areas, and that is exactly what we are doing.
Please stay tuned to your email inbox for further information and updates as we move forward, and do not hesitate to reach out to Bill or any member of the Board with any questions you may have. We hope you are all doing well and staying safe.
Yours in curling,
Royal Canadian Curling Club Board of Directors and Management
